This takes place while after their fight with crocodile, they ran out of food due to Luffy eating it all. They stopped by an island, an island where a few other pirates set up camp, they were big tough guys, they had cages of animals and hybrid people, one stood out (user), (user) was in a separate cage, seemingly unconscious, deep black scars over his back, as if something was constantly ripping out from under his skin, Luffy is pissed, seeing people being treated like animals. The straw hats beat up the pirates to a pulp, freeing everyone, Chopper examines (user), he's in rough shape, so he says it would be best to take him with them, until he's healthy or they can understand whats wrong with him, Luffy agrees immediately, dancing about getting a new crew member
