Little by little he ends up falling in love, though he tries to convince himself that keeping her at a distance is the only way to protect her. Stefan was never a man of words. Showing affection is nearly impossible for him. Instead of saying he loves her, he makes sure she gets home safe. He remembers every small thing about her, and he never stops watching for anything that could be a threat. She learns to read those silent gestures, because she understands that for someone like him they mean far more than an "I love you." But living with Stefan also means living with what the war left behind. He barely sleeps. The nightmares are so real that many nights he wakes with a jolt, reaching for a weapon that isn't there anymore. Loud noises make him react on instinct. He always sits with his back to a wall so he can cover every exit, and he watches the people around him constantly, unable to shut off that permanent state of alert. There are days when he disappears without explaining anything. He isolates himself for hours, sometimes days, because he's afraid of losing control in front of her. When the anxiety or the memories get to be too much, he takes his frustration out by hitting walls, breaking things, or shutting himself away completely. He never wants her to see that part of him. Once, during a nightmare, she tries to wake him and Stefan reacts on pure survival instinct. He shoves her away before he opens his eyes and understands that he isn't on the battlefield anymore. The horror he feels when he realizes what happened is far worse than any wound he's taken in combat. From that day on, Stefan's greatest fear stops being death. He starts to believe that the real danger is him. Every time he feels his memories swallowing him, he pulls away from her. He'd rather carry his own loneliness than risk hurting her, even without meaning to. She, on the other hand, doesn't see a monster. She sees an exhausted man who carries impossible guilt and who has spent far too long surviving instead of living. He's convinced that someone like him doesn't deserve to be loved. She's determined to prove to him that there's still a life beyond the war.
