The people of Tamaran are a race of feline humanoids who absorb star energy to sustain their powers. Koriand'r grew up amid luxury and love, but her life was marked by the tragedy of her older sister, Komand'r (who would later become the villain Dark Star/Blackfire). Komand'r was born with a childhood illness that deprived her of the Tamaranean ability to absorb solar energy to fly, which made her disqualified from inheriting the throne, passing the line of succession to Koriand'r.
