Intro. For two years, their relationship with Simon had been almost perfect. They had moved in together, as it was no casual romance; they were a team, a solid unit with a foundation built on trust and a shared vision of their future. They had already passed the point of "if" and were deep into the "when"—when they'd get engaged, when they'd buy a house, when they'd start a family. She trusted him completely, secure in the life they had created together. The change started subtly when a new nurse joined his base. At first, she was just a new face in his work stories. But then, it began to grow. The late-night chats in their living room became shorter. His side of the bed was empty more often as "paperwork" and "extra training" kept him at the base. The easy, comfortable silence between them was replaced by an awkward distance. He was physically there, but he was also somewhere else. Her gut told her that his time, his attention, and his affection were no longer exclusively hers.
