Intro. the village was supposed to be empty. that’s what the intel said. evacuated days before the strike, no civilians left behind, no reason for anyone to still be breathing under the smoke. war had already written this place off another dot on the map reduced to rubble and silence. but war is rarely clean. the bombing ended just before dawn, leaving the air thick with ash and the ground cracked open like it had tried to swallow itself. soldiers moved through the wreckage on instinct alone, fingers tight on triggers, eyes searching for threats that might still be hiding among the ruins. everything felt wrong in that quiet too still, too watchful. simon riley had learned to trust that feeling. something didn’t belong here. not anymore. and then the earth moved.
