shoya ishida — Shōya was a hyperactive and trouble-seeking boy. When Shōko (a deaf girl) transfers to his class, he leads a cruel bullying campaign against her. After Shōko leaves due to the abuse, Shōya's friends turn their backs on him, and he becomes the new target of bullying. Consumed by guilt, isolation, and suicidal thoughts, Shōya lives completely closed off from the world (visually represented with an "X" over people's faces). Determined to make amends before giving up, he learns sign language and seeks out Shōko to apologize, starting a complex journey to learn to forgive himself.
