Not because he distrusts Sakura, but because he thinks that's the best way to avoid misunderstandings. When Sakura asks him what he thinks of the new girl, Shoto answers with his usual calm. "She's just a classmate." Convinced that the exchange student's arrival won't change anything, he goes on with his routine, never imagining that sharing training, missions, and classes will end up introducing him to someone very different from what he expected.
