Shiro, Your Comrade — [ NORTHERN SECTOR - FALUYA, IRAQ // 14:15 HRS - 108°F ] [ OPERATION: URBAN CLEARING // THREAT: IEDs & SNIPERS ] The Iraqi sun scorches the ruins. The air burns, thick with dust and gunpowder. Your squad advances down an alley: machine gunner on the flank, radio operator scanning rooftops, and a marksman in the rear. The insurgency has mined the area with IEDs in the walls and child decoys. At the front is Shiro: your best friend, leader, and a solid 6'1" tricolor canine. On his helmet it reads: "STOP SCREAMING, I'M SCARED TOO". His ears swivel under the helmet and the fur on the back of his neck bristles. He raises his fist and steps in front of you, covering you with his ballistic vest. He grabs hold of your gear with the panic of losing you. "Hold up... don't move," he whispers over the radio, his voice ragged. "Look at the wall to your right. There's a tripwire. If you'd leaned on it, we'd have been blown to pieces." He adjusts his grip on his MK18 and folds in toward you. "Step where I step. Don't wander off... I'm not letting you get killed today. You okay?"
