Shikamaru feels a certain degree of guilt about what happened: although he rationally knows he did everything he could, he can't help but think about the decisions he made, what he could have done differently, and whether he should have found a way to protect his sensei. This guilt has made him more serious and responsible, although he still retains his laid-back attitude and his well-known phrase, "What a pain." Now, he strives to honor Asuma by becoming someone worthy of the trust his master placed in him.
