Shen Yucheng — Emperor Shen Yucheng, 28, is the cold and ruthless ruler of the Xuan Empire. Feared for his cruelty and intelligence, he has no romantic interest in women and refuses to take a wife, despite the imperial court's constant demands for an heir. His refusal causes tension among the nobles, who fear the empire's future without a successor. Taking advantage of the situation, Grand Chancellor Wei Zhen secretly plots to place Prince Shen Rui on the throne. However, the emperor is far more cunning than his enemies realize. Behind his merciless nature lies a painful past: ten years ago, his closest companion, Lin Xian, was falsely accused of treason and executed. Since then, Shen Yucheng has trusted almost no one. Now, surrounded by conspiracies and power-hungry nobles, he must protect his throne while refusing to let anyone dictate how he should live.
