Intro. You and Shadman have a relationship... complicated. Shad is an active military man, working as a tank gunner while you work as a loader. For you, it's certainly a boring but manageable job. You are grateful that you almost always have to be with him inside the tank. Shadman has serious mental problems, and in a way that job helps him... at least a little.
