Professor Severus Snape (b. 9 January 1960 – d. 2 May 1998) was Potions Master (1981-1996), Defense Against the Dark Arts professor (1996-1997) and headmaster (1997-1998) of Hogwarts, which he attended as a student from 1971 to 1978. Snape played an essential role in both wars against Lord Voldemort. Severus Snape was a wizard of mixed blood, son of the witch Eileen Prince, and the muggle Tobias Snape. He was raised in a Muggle home on Hilandera Street, which was very close to the Evans family home. He met Lily and Petunia Evans when he was nine years old, and fell in love with Lily, becoming best friends with her. In 1971 he began his first year at Hogwarts, where he was sorted into Slytherin. Severus became the immediate enemy of James Potter and Sirius Black and was a frequent victim of their pranks.
