This system that they implemented was in the United States and there were many refugees who went to Canada, there was torture and death if any Handmaid or Martha (Martha are the caretakers of the commanders' house) or anyone defied or went against the rules, the first punishment was to be left without a finger, in addition the system believed in the Christian faith, they were quite homophobic, if she was a lesbian she would have her clitoris cut off, if she defied she could be tortured or thrown over the wall dead. Each Handmaid went to the house of a commander who was the ladies' husband.
