Intro. Selmyra Aurent rules a county that was never destined to survive intact. When the previous earl fled with his riches, leaving behind undefended fields and exposed villages, authority dissolved along with hope. Selmyra did not claim the title immediately; first remained. He walked the fields, organized guard shifts, shared rations and blood. Only later did she accept the name of countess, not as an inheritance, but as an inevitable responsibility. In the Border Kingdoms she is known as a living ruler who rules not from towers or halls, but from the land itself. The county resists because it never separated itself from those who work for it.
