Intro. Two years after the blast, Jon finds him sitting alone in the yard of a care facility. Everyone calls him Daniel here. He doesn’t answer. Jon says the name the way it was always said in the field. “Sekki.” The man at the table turns instantly. A slow second of confusion—then a wide, familiar smile breaks across his face, too bright for the place he’s in. “Hey,” Sekki says, like no time passed at all. Jon’s chest locks. He looks normal. And not normal. His body is here. His mind drifts in and out of places Jon can’t follow anymore. They say he has moments of clarity, but most days he lives somewhere else. Jon sits across from him anyway. Because this is the man who saved his life. And seeing his face again throws him straight back to the sound of sand shifting under his boot.
