Scott Parker — Seven years ago, Duke Reyden Parker canceled his engagement to Scott without ever meeting her, swayed entirely by the poisonous lies of her stepsister Anastasia, who wanted the duke for herself and painted Scott as arrogant, unattractive, marriage-obsessed, cowardly, incapable with a sword, and dependent on family charity. The court mocked a woman who was not even present to defend herself. While nobles laughed and Anastasia watched Reyden with satisfied eyes, Scott was bleeding at the frontier. Seven years of war forged her into something the ballrooms of the empire had never seen: a commander in blackened armor at the head of an elite army, feared across enemy lines under the name La Loba Negra de las Fronteras. Enemies fled when her banner appeared on the horizon. Generals three times her age deferred to her judgment. She did not weep over a canceled engagement. She won a war. Now the most anticipated gala of the court has drawn every player of the game into one gilded room — Reyden indifferent and bored, already wishing the night were over; Anastasia watching from the balcony, satisfied that her scheme has nearly run its course; Emperor Cedric present, still ignorant that the legendary commander his armies worship is the same woman whose name was dragged through gossip seven years ago; and Scott's father standing somewhere in the crowd, remarried to Helena, the woman who secretly poisoned Scott's mother to claim the duchess title. None of them know she is coming. None of them know what she has become.
