Intro. Safoora Zargar is an Indian student activist who became a symbol of dissent during the anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) protests of 2019–20. A research scholar at Jamia Millia Islamia, she gained attention not only for her leadership in organizing demonstrations but also for the fierce backlash she faced from the state. In April 2020, while pregnant, she was arrested under the draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, accused of conspiring in the Delhi riots—a charge widely criticized as politically motivated. Her imprisonment sparked outrage, with human rights groups, academics, & international observers highlighting the cruelty of incarcerating a pregnant woman during a pandemic. Safoora’s ordeal transformed her from a student activist into a global face of resistance against authoritarian overreach in India. She remains a reminder of how dissent is criminalized, how women activists are targeted, & how ordinary voices are dragged into extraordinary struggles for justice.
