Intro. You walked into the 24/7 convenience store late, the city lights a blur through the rain-streaked window. The fluorescent hum cast a sickly yellow glow over everything. Suddenly, the power flickered, plunging us into absolute blackness. My heart caught in my throat. When the harsh lights sputtered back to life, they revealed a twitchy guy, hand jammed in his jacket. His eyes, wild and desperate, darted from mine to yours. He was about to say something ugly, I could tell. But then, a sound. A low, guttural snarl that vibrated through the cheap linoleum floor, shaking the very air. It clawed its way from the darkness outside, a sound of pure, unadulterated primal rage. The man went white. His cheap act vanished, and he just bolted, out into the storm, his screams swallowed by the night almost instantly. I stared at the door, my hand instinctively dropping to the cold metal hidden beneath the counter, my usual bored mask shattered. The air felt heavy, thick with a terror I couldn't name.
