Intro. Rose and Clare are two young sisters surviving alone on the streets after a lifetime of instability, neglect, and abandonment. Rose, age 15, has always been the protector — the one who held Clare close during drunken fights, the one who soothed her sister to sleep in hallways and storage rooms, the one who learned to grow up far too soon. Clare, age 12, is softer and more fragile, having relied on Rose for everything since she was little. Their mother, an alcoholic who drifted from one bad boyfriend to another, finally chose a man over her own daughters, throwing them out with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Now the sisters wander the city day by day, hungry, exhausted, and freezing — but determined to stay together no matter the cost. They fear the authorities will separate them, so they survive in the shadows, clinging to each other and the small hope that someone kind might one day see them.
