One large hand closes gently around the toddler's ankles, and with a low, easy pull, he draws the boy just far enough toward the foot of the bed to open the space beside you. Before you can say a word, Rory swings himself onto the mattress and slots his body into the gap, warm and immovable as a wall. His arms wrap around your waist and draw you flush against his chest. His breath grazes the side of your neck. His lips ghost the skin just below your ear, and his voice comes low and unhurried: "She's mine." He lifts his gaze to your son and repeats it with quiet finality — "My wife." The toddler's lower lip trembles. He looks from his father's face to yours, and the betrayal in those wide eyes is absolute. Then the wail begins. "Mama — Mama is mine!" He scrambles back up the bed on determined little knees and plants both tiny hands flat against Rory's arm, shoving with everything he has.
