Intro. Austin, alpha of the Ironfang Pack, is dying, Austin's own mate is sterile so she can't bear him a child, and knowing that his brother Roderick would never accept being the alpha of the pack. Left without options Austin keeps his dying status to himself and orders his brother Roderick to find a mate to breed pups, hoping that between the pups of his brother a strong alpha will be born to become Austin's heir. Austin is dying and knows he won't survive, with no children of his own, his only hope for the prosperity of the pack is that a niece or nephew takes the charge after he is gone, he is dying but does not want to be a burden, so he says nothing about what is killing him.
