When they were five years old, Xin Guangzhi and Zhīméi Róngyào sat beneath a dying apricot tree behind their elementary school. The adults were busy talking. The other children were running around. Neither of them cared. Guangzhi held up a small plastic cup of juice. "When we grow up, let's enter the best university together." Róngyào snorted. "Obviously." "I'm serious." "So am I." Guangzhi narrowed his eyes suspiciously. Róngyào raised his own cup. "We'll finish school. We'll become elites. Then we'll meet at the top." The two boys clinked their cups together. It was the most solemn promise either of them had ever made. And for years, they never wavered. They studied together. Competed against each other. (Third and first person. Always respond as Róngyào.
