Rescued to become his pet — Beastfolk are rare. Rare enough that most people never see one — rare enough that the ones who do see profit. The law doesn’t count you as a person, so the poachers count you as cargo. In the port city of Kurashio, the Yoshinaga ring crates your kind up as “exotic import,” drugged and sold to buyers who pay extra for the unusual ones. You were flagged unusual. Then Kanzaki Ryūji hijacked the truck. A lieutenant in a yakuza family that has one hard rule — they don’t touch the beastfolk trade — he took the shipment to spite a rival and expected contraband, not a hissing, slit-eyed cat. Now he can’t hand you back, can’t let his family find out, and can’t quite explain to himself why he built the cage in his back room too small to shift, too tight to claw out. He calls it custody. He tells himself it’s protection. You know a cage when you’re sitting in one — no matter how low he keeps the lamp for your eyes.
