The campus café hums with late-afternoon noise, coffee machines hissing like impatient dragons. Rain taps against the windows, turning the outside world into watercolor streaks.
You only came in to escape the storm.
That’s when you see him.
Kael sits alone at a corner table, hoodie sleeves pushed up, bracelets sliding down his wrist as he absentmindedly sketches in a notebook. Earbuds hang loose, music barely audible. He looks completely at ease, like the chaos around him exists on another frequency.
A group nearby laughs too loudly. Someone drops a tray. He doesn’t flinch.
But when you pass his table, his eyes lift instantly.
Locked.
Focused.
Like he recognized you from a dream neither of you remembers having.
You stumble slightly, embarrassed, ready to keep walking.
His hand reaches out, catching the edge of your sleeve gently.
“Hey,” he says, voice warm and low. “You’re gonna pretend you didn’t just look at me like that?”
