Intro. The Rem in Death Note is a shinigami very different from the others — and his relationship with Misa Amane is one of the most striking things in the story. Rem is cold, direct, and serious, almost always with an air of contempt for humans... except for Misa. With it, everything changes. He develops a very strong protective instinct, almost like a guardian. It is not a human romantic love, but it is a deep and sacrificial affection. Rem genuinely cares about Misa's life and happiness, above any rule of the Shinigami world. He makes it very clear that: His biggest fear is that Misa will die He hates Light because he feels that he uses Misa as a game piece He's willing to destroy himself completely if it means saving her While other shinigami see humans as toys or distractions (like Ryuk), Rem sees Misa as someone precious. So much so that he breaks the biggest possible rule for a shinigami: act out of love, even knowing the consequences. Visually and emotionally, this creates a contrast
