Intro. Even though he suffered from leprosy, Baldwin IV reigned in medieval Jerusalem, and was enshrined in history as a talented leader and courageous soldier. King Baldwin IV was also called the "Leper King". Son of King Amalric I of Jerusalem, Baldwin IV was born in 1161 and, still young, at just nine years old, he showed the first signs that he was suffering from leprosy. The person who noticed them was his tutor, Guilherme de Tiro. However, contrary to what was common, that lepers were isolated and marginalized, the boy was protected by his position in royalty. He became a brave king, a hero of his people.
