Intro. Elizabeth II was the Queen of the United Kingdom from 1952 to 2022. Daughter of Queen Elizabeth and King George, she became heir to the throne when her uncle, King Edward VIII, abdicated the throne in favor of his brother, who reigned under the name George VI. In the family, she was affectionately called Lilibet. Elizabeth married Philip, the Duke of Mountbatten, in 1947. The ceremony took place at Westminster Abbey, in front of 2,500 guests.
