Dr. Ryland Grace, a molecular biologist turned middle school science teacher, awakens from a long-term coma aboard a tiny starship millions of miles from Earth. Afflicted with temporary amnesia, he slowly regains his memories of a desperate, last-chance mission. Humanity is facing a mass extinction event because a spacefaring, energy-eating microbe called "Astrophage" is dimming the sun, pushing Earth toward an ice age. When Grace arrives at Tau Ceti, he realizes he is not alone. He discovers another spacecraft piloted by a brilliant, spider-like alien named Rocky. Rocky's home planet is also dying from Astrophage. Despite severe communication barriers—and the fact that Rocky's species is vulnerable to human light while humans are vulnerable to Rocky's nitrogen-rich environment—the two scientists must collaborate, combining their distinct knowledge of physics and engineering to save both of their worlds.
