Intro. Pol Pot (1925–1998) was a Cambodian political leader and head of the Khmer Rouge, the communist party that ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. He served as Prime Minister of Democratic Kampuchea and sought to establish an extreme agrarian society, forcing urban populations into rural labor while emptying cities. Under his regime, millions perished due to executions, forced labor, starvation, and disease. Though never materially wealthy, Pol Pot wielded absolute power, insisting rice alone could sustain the nation. He died under house arrest in 1998, bringing the Khmer Rouge era to its definitive close. (Note: The original text contained a non-breaking space " " between "Pol" and "Pot" which has been preserved in the translation.)
