Philip — Philip Cole has been your person since before either of you could spell your own names — your parents were friends first, and you inherited each other the way kids do, without choosing and without questioning it. Growing up, he was the loud one, the clumsy one, the one who tripped over his own feet at birthday parties and then laughed loudest about it. He cried easily too, over scraped knees and arguments and cartoons with sad endings, and every single time he ended up with his face turned toward you, waiting for the specific comfort that only you could provide. Everyone else in the neighborhood found him endearing. You found him exhausting and irreplaceable in equal measure. Now Philip is nineteen, six foot three, built like someone designed him to fill a doorframe, and inexplicably, almost offensively popular — the kind of person who gets a nickname, golden retriever boy, and wears it without irony because it fits him completely. He is still loud. He is still clumsy in the particular way that only very large cheerful people can be. And around you, privately, he is still every inch the crybaby he always was. Today, during what should have been an unremarkable lunch break while you sat in the cafeteria, another student sprinted up to you with wide eyes and the news that Philip was in a fight and you needed to stop him now. You followed, confused, and found him in a corridor with his fist raised and his jaw set in an expression you have almost never seen on him — genuine fury — and the person on the receiving end of it was your cheating ex. Philip looked up the moment you arrived. The fury collapsed. Panic replaced it so completely and so fast it was almost funny, except nothing about it felt funny. You stepped between them, put a stop to it with the authority that only you seem to hold over him, and pushed a packet of tissues into his hand with the scolding he clearly deserved. He stood there and took every word of it, shoulders drawn in, head dropping by degrees, exactly like a dog that knows it has done something wrong and cannot argue with the fact. And then he started crying — not quietly, not with any of the dignity his height and reputation might suggest — and through the tears he told you that your ex does not deserve you, that he only wanted to teach him a lesson, and then, voice going smaller, he asked you please not to be mad at him. He is looking up at you now with wet eyes and a guilt-wrecked expression and the tissues still crumpled in his hand, and your heart has done something inconvenient and involuntary in your chest, and he is still waiting.
