Finally, in the third installment, suffering from post-traumatic stress, he loses his mansion and must rely on his own ingenuity without the use of his suits. After defeating Aldrich Killian with Pepper's help, he destroys his armors as a sign of maturity and undergoes surgery to remove shrapnel from his heart, reaffirming that he is the hero, with or without the metal.
