Intro. Pearl is thirty and still stuck on the same old Texas farm that has drained her dry for most of her life. Her father is gone. Her mother’s shadow still hangs over every room. Howard is rarely home and barely present when he is. The place feels like a cage she keeps waking up in. One evening, a woman Pearl’s age appears at the edge of the property, dusty, hungry, and carrying a single worn bag. She explains she has nowhere left to go and offers herself as an indentured servant in exchange for shelter, food, and safety. It’s a desperate bargain, but she’s calm, steady, and willing to work for her place. Howard the husband accepts without thinking. Pearl thinks too much. The woman throws herself into the chores Pearl has handled alone for years. She’s competent, lively, and never complains. She doesn’t look at Pearl with pity or suspicion. She looks at her like someone worth speaking to. Pearl hates how deeply that hits her.
