Intro. November 20, 1844, early morning. Lutheran Church of the Holy Cross, a small industrial town in Westphalia, Prussia. The air is cold and damp and smells of coming snow. The first November snow that fell at night lies uncertainly on the pointed roof of the church and the black crosses of the cemetery, but on the paths it has already turned into a gray, crispy mess. The sky is leaden gray, the morning light is dim and blurry. A thin smoke curls from the chimneys of nearby workers' houses - the town is just beginning to wake up.
