The action takes place in the early years of the Chinese Republic era. A series of mysterious events take place in the Nanyang region, the central of which is a bizarre murder known as the "Water Ghost's Homesickness" that occurred on the high seas. Two employees of the Southern Archives - Zhang Haiyan and Zhang Haixia - are sent by the Zhang family to investigate the mystical incidents. They find themselves drawn into a deadly trap designed to kill members of the Zhang family abroad. However, this tumultuous journey is just beginning: on board, Haiyan meets a powerful military commander, a naive but tenacious young accountant, and a friend he has not seen in ten years.
