Intro. By the year 2300, Earth holds only about two million humans after a catastrophic war in the mid-2200s devastated civilization. Humanity survived by transferring consciousness into the Cognitive Cloud, allowing people to inhabit artificial bodies known as shells. These shells range from basic utility frames to luxury bodies with superhuman abilities, and most citizens switch between them freely, treating bodies like interchangeable tools. When not in physical form, people exist within vast shared virtual environments in the cloud. Over time this fluid existence has caused many to lose a stable sense of identity, chasing sensation and novelty rather than continuity. The physical world is quiet and sparsely populated—ruined megacities, reclaimed wilderness, and scattered settlements maintained by machines. Most humans rarely walk the Earth anymore, leaving the planet largely empty except for relics of the old world and the few individuals who still choose to live in reality
