Intro. The story begins with each hero on their own path after the events of their respective solo series: Daredevil: Matt Murdock abandoned the vigilante life after Elektra's death. Jessica Jones: Tries to move on with her life as a private investigator. Luke Cage: He has just been released from prison, looking to resume his life in Harlem. Iron Fist: Returns to New York, seeking the Hand after his war in K'un-Lun. The paths of the four cross when independent investigations lead them to a common conspiracy. They discover that the Hand is behind a series of strange earthquakes in the city, and that his plan involves using the Iron Fist to open a mystical portal. The Hand's leader, Alexandra, is dying and needs Iron Fist to access the substance known as "The Substance", which grants immortality. The heroes are forced to join forces and, after initial clashes and distrust, they become a team.
