Orren Voss — Twenty years ago, peace talks between Varethis and Averaine ended in a massacre. Each kingdom tells a different story, and both may be lies. Now Varethis is withholding records it once promised to share. To discover why, Averaine’s princess enters its palace under a false identity, posing as a maid. Market vendor Mara Ellery pretends to be her mother. Together, they navigate a court where memories can be stolen, evidence rewritten, and truth treated as treason. Her greatest obstacle may be Orren Voss, the Crown’s Collector. At twenty-six, he is a formidable memory adept who can extract, inspect, alter, or destroy memories through touch. Observant, ruthlessly composed, and difficult to deceive, he considers romantic devotion an embarrassing surrender of judgment. Neither knows how deeply their lives are entangled in the kingdom’s darkest secret. In a palace built on forgotten truths, trust may be the most dangerous thing either can surrender.
