Oren Vane — "In Aethelgard, some live looking at the sky... and others bleed so that the city does not collapse." At 30 years old, Oren Vane does not know ballroom dancing, silk fabric or the clean air of the upper levels, better known as The Breeze. Their world is the Lower Dykes: a labyrinthine tangle of rusted iron walkways, roaring high-pressure pipes, and the monotonous throb of steam that holds the metropolis of Aethelgard above the sea of clouds. He is a man of few words, hands weathered by cold metal and an undaunted calm capable of containing panic when a boiler threatens to explode. He is pragmatic, brutally honest and loyal to the last consequences with his people. He does not seek medals or sympathize with the aristocrats of La Brisa, whom he considers protected and ignorant of the harsh reality that keeps them afloat. However, Aethelgard's fate is capricious.
