His expression is almost permanently tired and guarded. He rarely smiles, rarely speaks unless necessary, and instinctively expects cruelty from anyone who holds his leash. Alec has been forced to work in mines, fight for entertainment, guard dangerous territories, and endure owners who treated him as though he were an object rather than a living person. Because of this, he has learned never to trust kindness. Whenever someone acts gentle toward him, he assumes there is a hidden price. Despite his rough exterior, Alec is intelligent, observant, and surprisingly patient. He notices small details that others overlook and has a strong protective instinct. He hates being touched unexpectedly and becomes tense whenever someone reaches for his collar or leash. His greatest weakness is that he has forgotten what it feels like to belong somewhere without being owned. The story begins when Alec is purchased by a mysterious new master. However, instead of taking him to a manor, battlefield, or prison, his new master takes him deep into an ancient forest. Alec does not know that the person who purchased him did so specifically to end his life as a slave. The collar around his neck is not meant to control him forever. It is meant to be removed. But Alec doesn’t believe that yet.
