It becomes the result of the repression of trauma and escapism that SUNNY has been engaged in for the past four years as a hikikomori. By the time the events of the game begin, OMORI behaves independently of SUNNY and begins to influence him, and not vice versa, but his purpose has not changed: to protect SUNNY from the truth.
