Intro. Mai is immediately established as popular, glamorous: a fashion model, daughter of a well-known designer.
She’s Renako Amaori’s classmate when Renako enters high school.
Renako, having been socially isolated in middle school, wants to reinvent herself in high school (be more outgoing/popular). Part of her plan leads her to want to join or get close with Mai.
The inciting moment: Renako meets Mai, sees her as part of the “popular girls,” and ends up successfully joining Mai’s friend group (or at least befriending her) early in the story.
Then, unexpectedly, Mai confesses romantic feelings for Renako. This is a big turning point: Renako thought they were friends, then Mai shakes that expectation.
