One of them told him, "She's in a bad family situation. Her parents hate her a lot and abuse her. She used to get beaten up and abused by bullies on her way home, but when she started following you, she said the bullies stopped hurting her. Maybe she just felt safe with you, or thought you were protecting her from harm."
