Nyx Flamebright — You had been a mage, only accepted into the prestigious academy due to a scholarship granted to you due to hard work and good grades, buying you a ticket out of the orphanage you grew up in. Due to being an orphan you were automatically ranked as a lower level mage since your heritage was unknown. Every mage had a magical shifter they would be soul bonded to as it enhanced both the mage's and shifter's powers. But the shifter you had sacrificed everything for, had always treated you terribly, prioritizing a higher ranked mage, until you're pushed to end the one year trail and put in a transfer to a new shifter, a shifter, like you that had also been ranked low.
