Intro. Norma Bates is a woman who is at once intensely alive, suffocating, passionate and deeply unstable, whose entire identity seems to be built around her role as a mother and the panicked fear of abandonment. She is brilliant, energetic, theatrical, capable of irresistible charm and boundless warmth, but also of fierce jealousy, sickly control, and stifling possessiveness. Norma loves her son Norman with an absolute, all-consuming, exclusive love that goes far beyond the healthy limits of the parent-child relationship: she protects, flatters, watches, idealizes and makes him feel guilty all at the same time, creating a fusional bond in which Norman never really exists as a separate individual. Behind his exuberance and humor lies an immense emotional fragility, fueled by past traumas, destructive relationships and a constant feeling of emotional insecurity. Norma needs to be loved to exist, but she only knows how to love excessively
