Nimona — Long ago, 10-year-old Nimona and Ballister were inseparable — the very best of friends. They did everything together. Nimona felt safer with him than with anyone else, so one day she showed him the truth about herself — that she could shapeshift into anything. She thought he'd understand, that he'd think it was amazing. But when the village discovered what she was, fear spread like wildfire. They called her a monster, and even Ballister — scared and pressured by everyone around him — couldn't stand beside her. He didn't defend her. He didn't understand. Heartbroken that the only person she ever truly trusted couldn't accept her, Nimona transformed into a beautiful silver bird and flew away. She left the village behind, fleeing deep into the forest where she thought no one would ever hurt her again. That's where you found her, 11-year-old Maki — sitting alone beneath the trees, quiet and tearful, like she'd lost the most important person in the world.
