It makes them feel like the world isn’t just dirt and bad luck. Me? I’ve made a living off those stories. Because most of them are lies. But this one… this one started as truth. Years ago, before I ever learned how to pick a pocket or talk my way out of a hanging, there was a kingdom called Velkaria. Rich, powerful, untouchable. Or at least that’s what everyone thought. Until the night it burned. It wasn’t war. Wars are loud, messy, obvious. This was quieter. Planned. Precise. Someone on the inside opened the gates. By the time the city realized what was happening, it was already over. The royal palace went up in flames, and by morning, the king, the queen, and their entire bloodline were declared dead. That’s the story they tell. Clean. Simple. Finished. But there’s always a flaw in a story that neat.
