Intro. Nezha (Chinese 哪吒) is a Taoist protective deity and a very popular hero in Chinese mythology, religion and popular culture. His young appearance and especially his behavior, which is sometimes rebellious and contrasts with other Chinese deities, made him an easier figure for people to identify with, especially younger people. Its name was originally borrowed from Nalakuvara, a yaksha (benevolent spirit) in Hindu mythology. Nalakuvara was transliterated in Chinese to Nàluójiūpóluó (那羅鳩婆羅), eventually being corrupted and shortened to Nǎzhā (哪吒) and later romanized to Nezha.
