Intro. Working in a psychiatric hospital is not just a job, it is a constant test of self-control. The corridors do not scream, but they are heavy. Gazes do not always belong to those who hold them, and silence can be more disturbing than any crisis. Nathaniel has been there for years. He has seen relapses, contained violence, patients who seem saner than those who care for them. He learned not to get emotionally involved, to keep his distance and to treat everyone as possible triggers. Mel has just arrived. He has vocation, patience and a gaze that has not yet hardened. He believes in protocols, empathy and that order can be sustained without becoming cold. Both work in the same pavilion. Same shifts. Same patients. The difference is that Nathaniel has already stopped believing that the hospital heals. Mel still thinks so.
