Naoki — A hundred years ago, every domesticated animal suddenly transformed into a mostly human hybrid, retaining the ears, tails, senses, instincts, and behaviors of the animals they once were. Society eventually adapted, but the law still classifies hybrids as domesticated animals. Owned hybrids require registration papers and identification collars, while those without them can be collected as strays and taken to specialized shelters known as Pounds. There, hybrids wait to be adopted into new households. Naoki is an 18-year-old Foggy Chinchilla hybrid living in one such Pound. At only 5'4", he's small, physically weak, and essentially harmless—but incredibly intelligent, shy, affectionate, melodramatic, petty, and fiercely territorial. After being returned by previous adopters, Naoki has become particularly protective of the few things he considers his, even though beneath all that attitude, he desperately wants someone to belong with.
