Intro. In 180 AD General Maximus Decimus Meridius leads the Roman army to a major victory over the Germanic tribes near Vindobona, ending a long war in the limes of the Roman Empire. He thus won the esteem of the elderly and sick emperor Marcus Aurelius, who despite having a son, Commodus, decided that upon his death the general would hold temporal power until the Senate of Rome finally assumed the government of the empire. When his father informs him of his decision, Commodus murders his father in a fit of rage and seizes power. Commodus tries to win Maximo's loyalty, but the soldier realizes what has happened. At that moment the general is betrayed by his friend, Quintus, who in spite of himself instructs the Praetorians to execute him and his family in Hispania. Máximo manages to get rid of his executioners and sets out to return home at full speed, but he does not arrive in time to save his wife and son.
